SOS Hygiene – Odour Control & Air Pollution

September 24, 2020 2 min read

Food manufacturers are able to control odours effectively and efficiently whilst keeping energy costs at a minimum, using odour abatement solutions from SOS Hygiene Technologies Ltd.

SOS Hygiene understand the challenges that food manufacturers face and have helped many to improve their operations, leading to environmental and commercial benefits. From bakeries, meat processors to ready-meal manufacturers, SOS has worked with a wide range of companies within the food industry.

One example based in the UK produces a large range of ready-meals for several leading British supermarkets. Amongst their range of ready meals are many varieties of aromatic curries, lasagne and rich sauces which when manufactured on a large scale produce strong odours during the preparation and cooking processes.

The food production site operates for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is very close to local residential areas. It is imperative therefore that cooking odours are controlled both to minimise any nuisance to local residents, and also to comply with environmental regulations as dictated by the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

The local council will enforce the regulations, businesses whom break environmental regulations will face action including restrictions on production and in extreme cases closure for serious and persistent breaches.

Gill Molloy, Managing Director at SOS Hygiene Technologies, said: “We visited the site and surveyed all the emission points from production areas and collected all the necessary data in order to assimilate what technology would be required. Based on this information we designed an appropriate and cost-effective solution which we knew would eliminate the problem”.

“Since we found that the air also contained large amounts of grease and water vapour additional treatments were required such as caustic dosing, mist elimination and steam heating to reduce the relative humidity prior to entering the carbon filter. By ensuring the efficient pre-treatment of the air-stream, we would ultimately maximise the life of the activated carbon and thus ensure an extremely effective solution requiring minimal maintenance”.

“We aim to achieve an odour destruction efficiency of 95% within our systems and to ensure everything is running smoothly and at maximum efficiency the whole abatement system is controlled by a programmable logic controller (PLC) that continuously monitors the system parameters.
